Estrogen Dominance

What is Estrogen?

Estrogen is a group of hormones responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics during puberty. It also plays a crucial role in regulating the reproductive system in adulthood. While we typically associate estrogen with females, men also have small amounts of this hormone. Estrogen levels fluctuate across the menstrual cycle. There are three types of estrogen in women, and their levels vary throughout different life stages:

  • Estrone (E1): Made from the adrenal glands. Elevated levels may be related to estrogen + cancers.
  • Estradiol (E2): Made in the ovaries. Estradiol is the primary type of estrogen in women from menstruation through menopause.
  • Estriol (E3): Weakest estrogen. Estriol production increases during pregnancy.

What is Estrogen Dominance?

Estrogen dominance is a type of hormonal imbalance where there is an excessive amount of estrogen compared to progesterone. It can manifest in several ways:

  • Your body produces an excessive amount of estrogen.
  • You have an imbalance where estrogen levels are too high in relation to progesterone.
  • You have excessive exposure to xenoestrogens leading to estrogen dominance.

Common Estrogen Dominance Symptoms

Estrogen dominance can present with a range of symptoms, and the experience varies from one woman to another.

  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Irregular or heavy menstrual periods
  • Breast tenderness/swelling
  • Water retention
  • Cramping
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Weight gain
  • Bloating

Additionally, estrogen dominance can affect the availability of thyroid hormones, potentially leading to reduced levels of thyroid hormones in the body.

How to Support Estrogen Detoxification

Below are some tips for how you can support estrogen detoxification.

  • Support Phase I Detoxification
    • Consume foods such as cruciferous vegetables, broccoli sprouts, raw carrots, green tea, citrus foods
    • Consider adding spices to your food such as Rosemary or Tumeric
    • Consider supplementation with Resveratrol
  • Support Phase II Detoxification
    • Consider consuming foods such as eggs, bone broth, leafy greens, organ meats, beets
    • Consider supplementation with our Methyl Support supplement
  • Support Phase III Detoxification
    • Drink sufficient water
    • Consume sufficient fiber
      • Aim for a daily intake of 35 grams of fiber daily by incorporating a variety of vegetables and fruits into your diet. Supplement as needed. If you’re dealing with constipation, it’s likely that estrogen is not exiting efficiently and may re-enter your body’s circulation.
      • Increase fiber slowly to avoid excess bloating and gas.
      • Aim for 5-10 servings of vegetables per day
    • Prioritize Quality Sleep
      • Getting a minimum of seven hours of sleep per night is essential. Your body and hormones rely on adequate sleep for optimal function.

Decrease Exposure to Endocrine Disruptors

  • Food

    • Choose hormone-free dairy and meat products.
    • Avoid herbicides, pesticides and fungicides.
    • Choose organic, local, in-season foods (peel non-organic fruits and vegetables).
    • Avoid canned food.

  • Plastics

    • Minimize the use of plastics.
    • Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers or using plastic wrap for storing or microwaving food (prefer ceramics or glass for food storage).

    • Avoid refilling plastic water bottles.
    • Do not freeze water in plastic bottles for later consumption.
