“I’ve always had a pooch on my belly – I wish it would magically disappear.”
“I’m ok with my body, but I wouldn’t mind being just a little bit thinner right HERE.”
These patients were all satisfied after Coolsculpting (cryolipolysis). This is the latest technique for fat removal, and it requires NO INCISIONS. It is completely non-surgical. An applicator wand is placed over the skin to safely freeze the underlying fat cells, and noticeable results take shape within weeks. No fuss, no downtime. The starting cost is under $1000, and priced by the size of the treatment area and the amount of time needed to freeze the cells.
What Is CoolSculpting?
What is the catch? Dr. Donaldson was skeptical of the new technology at first because liposuction removal of fat cells is the gold standard treatment. For a patient who wants the most thorough, most dramatic contouring result, he still prefers liposuction; however, there are many patients who don’t want to undertake surgery no matter what. These patients are often the best Coolsculpting candidates. The result is more subtle, and it may require several treatments instead of just one, but it is a safe and effective alternative.
The idea of freezing fat cells to destroy them developed when doctors noticed smaller cheeks in kids who ate numerous popsicles. Harvard physicians then worked for a decade to determine how exactly the larger areas of fat on adults could be safely frozen. This research led to Coolsculpting, which has now helped millions of patients around the world.
How Does The CoolSculpting Treatment Work?
The Coolsculpting patient should come to the office wearing loose clothing, and will then change into a robe. Once the surgeon identifies an appropriate area for Coolsculpting, it is marked using a template, and a matching applicator wand is selected. Larger areas such as the abdomen require a much larger surface area than smaller spots such as under the chin. A thin gel pad is then placed over the area to help form a seal, and the wand is applied. A vacuum is created to pull skin and fat into the wand, where it is rapidly cooled to 37 degrees for approximately one hour.
During this treatment time, the patient may work on a computer, watch tv or read a book! When the treatment has concluded, the wand and gel pad are removed and the area is massaged for two minutes to help break up the frozen cells. For larger areas, the wand is moved over several inches and the process is repeated for another hour.
Donaldson Plastic Surgery is thrilled to be one of the first in Ohio to offer Coolsculpting’s newest technology, the CoolAdvantage applicator. This applicator delivers the proprietary CoolSculpting® cooling technology at a lower temperature, efficiently treating those stubborn areas in just 35 minutes. Most patients report that the CoolAdvantage provides for an even more comfortable treatment experience.
CoolSculpting Recovery Time
Immediately after treatment, the overlying skin is red and numb. It may take several days for the color and feeling to return to normal, and patients notice tingling and sometimes a slight burning sensation as the nerves re-warm. Fewer than 5% of patients experience a more intense burning sensation, and this can be treated with a 3-day medication. Swelling is common in the first few days, and often treated with Spanx compression and a combination of heat packs and cool packs. There is no limitation on patient activity during this recovery period.
Patients return to the office for follow-up eight weeks later. This is how much time it takes for all of the injured fat cells to be swept away by the body, and the results can be fully seen. During this visit, the patient can decide whether to pursue another treatment, or to simply move on and enjoy the result.
CoolSculpting Treatment Areas
The most popular areas are the belly and the flanks, or love handles — these areas respond very well to treatment. Other common sites include the inner and outer thighs, the upper arms and under the chin. Any fatty bulge is likely amenable to treatment.
How Much Does CoolSculpting Cost?
Coolsculpting is priced by the size of the treatment area and the amount of time that is necessary to freeze the cells in that area. The starting price is under $1000, and financing is available through CareCredit and Prosper. Significant savings are possible since anesthesia and OR’s are not used.
How Schedule a CoolSculpting Procedure?
Dr. Donaldson meets each patient in consultation to determine whether they are a candidate for Coolsculpting. An appointment may be made by completing the contact information on this website, or by calling 614-442-7610. Typically, treatment is scheduled several days later. But if the Coolsculpting device is not being used at the same time, it may be possible to provide the treatment immediately afterward — you could leave the office an hour later with less fat!
