Medical microneedling uses a handheld device with tiny, sterile needles to penetrate the skin at varying, customizable depths. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process where the skin will release growth factors and produce collagen.
The glow from microneedling is caused by the influx of collagen and elastin that is created by this response, leaving the skin looking smoother, younger and brighter than before. By applying PRP topically before, during and after your microneedling treatment, your body’s own growth factors and nutrients are able to quickly aid in the recovery of your skin and jumpstart collagen production.
PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, is a small sample of your blood that is very highly concentrated with growth factors and healing properties. PRP is quickly and easily obtained in our office by drawing a small amount of your blood and extracting the most beneficial parts. Due to the high concentration of platelets (thrombocytes), PRP is used across many medicinal disciplines as a way to promote tissue growth for wound healing, injury, and to even improve and restore key bodily functions like sexual wellness and hair growth.
Advanced Microneedling with PRP is commonly referred to as the “Vampire Facial” due to the use of human blood to regenerate the skin – but don’t be afraid! Advanced Microneedling with PRP is completely safe and painless to receive. This is an all-natural, well-established anti-aging remedy for the face, neck, and chest.
Adding PRP to microneedling before, during and after treatment means you are getting the most reward at the most optimal times. When PRP is applied to the skin before microneedling, the microneedling pen pushes the PRP deep into the dermal layer, which tells your body to call even more growth factors to the area from the very onset of treatment. The plasma also creates a wet surface to the skin, which allows the microneedling pen to glide over you skin with ease for an even, uniform treatment.
The needles from the pen also create tiny micro-channels in the skin, meaning the PRP added throughout the treatment easily soaks in to the deepest parts of the dermal layer. We provide you with a container of your PRP for you to apply later, which also helps to speed up the healing process at home.
Advanced Microneedling with PRP is typically performed for the face, neck, and chest. First, we will perform a deep cleanse to prepare your skin for treatment. We will then apply a topical numbing anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout the whole process. As these areas begin to numb, about 2 ml of your blood will be drawn from your arm by a member of our staff and placed into our Magellan PRP centrifuge for separation. While the PRP is being extracted from the blood sample, the numbing anesthetic will be removed.
Tatjana will then apply the PRP to your skin and begin the microneedling. Typically, an electronically-powered microneedling pen is used in a small circular fashion across the skin. In some cases, your medical aesthetician may opt to use a facial roller instead of the pen. Both forms of collagen-induction therapy (CIT) are effective. Because the needles are creating a controlled injury, you will likely have some pinpoint bleeding in addition to the PRP. Tatjana will gently massage the blood and PRP mixture into the areas already needled so that the growth factors are reintroduced to the skin.
The treatment takes between 45 and 60 minutes to complete.
You will have downtime for a couple of days after this treatment before your skin returns to a normal-looking state. Directly after Microneedling with PRP, your skin will appear red with inflammation like sunburn, and will feel tight, tender and dry. You may experience sensitivity similar to a sunburn, as well.
Downtime for Advanced Microneedling with PRP can range between 2-5 days depending on your rate of healing. As the redness subsides, your skin will begin to flake and dead skin will naturally peel away as newer, fresher skin takes its place.
How should you care for your skin after receiving Advanced Microneedling with PRP? You may be instructed to not use any of your regular skin care or cosmetic products for the first few days after treatment. Your skin is in a delicate state, and most products will do more harm than good during the first part of the healing process. You will receive special, medical-grade A, C & E oil to use on your skin for the first 3 days that will act like a superfood to your skin. This oil, a gentle cleanser, and water will be the only things we recommend you use until your skin heals.
You will want to avoid sun exposure and any harsh skin treatments during the healing period. Your skin will be flaking for a few days, but any scrubs and exfoliation products should be avoided until your skin has fully healed. You’ll see glowing skin reveal itself within the first week. You’ll find your skin is fresher, brighter, dewier, and more supple than it was before, and you will see a continued appearance in overall skin quality in the days and weeks to come, especially with routine treatments!
The medical aesthetic experts at Donaldson Plastic Surgery recommend an initial series of 6 treatments spaced out every other week. This cadence is important for maximized efficacy in the first few weeks of Advanced Microneedling. Your skin will be transformed into tighter, smoother, newer-looking skin. After the initial 6 treatments, we recommend one treatment per month for maintenance.
