At the Donaldson Plastic Surgery medspa, we describe microneedling as a nonsurgical, cosmetic marvel. This incredible aesthetic procedure is used to treat acne scarring, scattered pigmentation, UV damage, aging lines, stretch marks and poor skin texture. The rapid increase in cell turnover caused by this stimulation results in undeniable skin clarity, consistency and glow.
While microneedling is typically performed on the face, it can also be used to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars on other parts of the body. This treatment is safe for all skin types and ethnicities.
Microneedling is a minimally-invasive procedure that improves skin tone, texture and quality. One of our experienced aesthetic professionals uses a small probe to deliver a series of precise pulses to the affected area. This triggers the release of natural growth factors while creating new collagen and elastin. In response to this stimulation, the skin plumps and thickens, reducing the appearance of scars, fine lines and wrinkles.
The procedure is very straightforward when performed by experienced providers. First, the skin is cleansed and a topical numbing ointment is applied. After waiting several minutes, the ointment is removed and a small probe containing 36 fine points is passed over the skin with the use of a lubricating “glide.” We prefer a hyaluronic acid glide, which plumps and hydrates the skin as the procedure progresses. Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in skin collagen, but it decreases and thins with age.
No, microneedling isn’t painful. This treatment creates small channels in the skin and may increase the absorption of this important collagen component but the numbing agent does its job. This means you likely won’t feel a thing during the procedure except for vibrations from the device!
Immediately afterward, treated skin usually appears pink or red like a mild sunburn. This effect may last 24-48 hours, depending on the depth of treatment. Pinpoint bleeding or bruising are possible; both are alleviated with the aftercare products we provide. Your skin may also feel tight — this is normal and expected, and it indicates the skin’s elastic properties.
We will ask you to continue the use of hyaluronic acid in conjunction with our recommended moisturizers and sun protection. Within one day, mineral makeup can be safely applied. Several days after treatment, your skin will seem very dry, and a good moisturizer will reduce flaking. When paired with platelet-rich plasma (PRP), patients can see a 1-2 day reduction in healing time. Following the established microneedling aftercare instructions is essential to ensuring excellent cosmetic results.
Results are typically seen within a week after treatment and they will continue to improve over two to three months. Microneedling can be safely repeated every four to six weeks until the desired effect is obtained. The number of treatments depends on the severity of the problem and each patient’s unique response.
Typically, three treatments spaced four to six weeks apart are often needed to observe maximal collagen induction. Three to six treatments are recommended for scar reduction.
