Microneedling Aftercare Instructions

What To Do After Your Microneedling Treatment

Microneedling Aftercare Instructions

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves using a device to skillfully make tiny punctures in the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the skin’s natural healing response, which results in improved skin texture, firmness and overall appearance. While this non-surgical treatment is largely safe and well-tolerated by most patients, it’s important to follow proper microneedling aftercare instructions to minimize any potential side effects and to ensure optimal, long-term results.

When Should I Wash My Face After Microneedling?

It is safe to clean the treated area with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser to remove any bacteria or impurities 8 hours after your session. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubs that can irritate the skin. Products with retinol and glycolic acid should not be used during this time.

“For the first 3 days and nights, I have patients using a specific package of medical-grade skincare products based on their unique circumstances — and nothing else outside of sunblock during the day. The products we provide aren’t things you can just buy off Amazon!”

Can I Take A Shower After Microneedling?

Avoid taking hot showers or soaking in a bath for 24 to 48 hours after the treatment, as this can irritate the skin. Instead, opt for lukewarm water and a gentle cleansing routine. Patients should also avoid saunas for the same reason.

What Type Of Sunscreen Is Best After Microneedling?

The skin will most likely be more sensitive to UV radiation after a microneedling treatment. Protect the treated area from sun exposure by wearing a hat or applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. We strongly advise against chemical sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens are always best.

Can I Work Out After Microneedling?

Wait 48 – 72 hours after the treatment before engaging in any strenuous physical activity, as this can irritate the skin. If you have to get some sort of physical activity in, you can go for a brisk walk where you’re elevating your heart rate but not sweating. Sweat will burn and can result in blistering.

“A common reaction some patients experience is the urge to pick or scratch at the recently-treated area. You should absolutely avoid doing this because it can potentially introduce bacteria, increase the risk of infection and prolong the recovery process.”

What Should I Eat After My Treatment?

Just as hydration was important while preparing for your microneedling treatment, a solid increase in water intake is recommended after. A well-balanced diet should be enough to help you recover on time. However, if you’re looking to make modifications to aid in the process, we suggest adding more protein-rich foods, controlling your blood sugar and getting natural sources of specific wound-healing vitamins and minerals, such as iron, zinc, vitamins A, C and K, antioxidants, probiotics and fish oil.

Can I Drink After Microneedling?

Yes, you can drink alcohol after microneedling, but it is not recommended. Alcohol can dehydrate the skin, which will slow down the healing process and increase the risk of side effects, including redness, itching, and swelling. Additionally, alcohol can also weaken your immune system, which can make you more susceptible to infection if your skin is punctured during a microneedling treatment.

It’s best to avoid alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours after a microneedling treatment. If you do choose to partake after microneedling, it’s important to stay hydrated by drinking water and avoid consuming excessive amounts.

If I’m Experiencing Discomfort, At What Point Should I Call My Provider?

A patient should call their treatment provider immediately if there’s an allergic reaction, rash, swelling, infection or pain. Do not attempt to resolve the problem with at-home solutions as many of these can actually exacerbate the issue.

“The more control your provider has, the more they can pinpoint any potential complications in the future. If you follow the recovery plan that was built for you and you still encounter irritation or a reaction, the provider should be able to diagnose the issue immediately.”

What Additional Treatments Can Prolong My Microneedling Results?

  • Halo: To address fine lines, sun damage & uneven skin tone.
  • BBL: To address pigmentation concerns & freckles
  • Morpheus8: For greater skin tightening & lift

It’s crucial to be diligent about proper aftercare and your follow-up skincare regimen to minimize any potential side effects and ensure incredible, long-term results from your microneedling treatment.
