You may be a candidate for eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) if you have excessive, sagging, or wrinkled upper or lower eyelid skin. Upper eyelid lift can be helpful if you have excess upper eyelid skin that interferes with vision, or if you have lost your natural upper eyelid crease due to puffy fat pouches. If your face seems tired tired or aged because of dark circles or puffy fat in the lower lids, then a lower eyelid lift will provide a more youthful and rested appearance.

Dr. Donaldson performs the eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) procedure on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. Incisions are made in the natural crease of the upper lids and beneath the lash line in the lower lids. In some cases, excess fat and skin are removed; in others, fat is rearranged or added to fill in hollow spaces. If only fat adjustments are necessary in the lower lids, they may be made through an incision inside the lids that are totally hidden with no external incision or scar (transconjunctival blepharoplasty).

Sutures are usually removed or dissolve within 4 to 6 days. Initial mild discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Bruising, swelling and sensitivity to light may last a week or two. Eye makeup can be used after sutures are removed and contact lenses can be worn whenever comfortable.

If eyelid lift surgery is being done to improve the field of vision, insurance may cover the surgery. Otherwise, eyelid lift is considered cosmetic, and our team will help you determine the best solution for payment.

Your specific risks during eyelid lift can only be determined after an office consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome of the surgery occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
