Sclerotherapy: Removing Spider Veins Without Surgery Or Downtime

Spider veins (sometimes called “telangiectasia”) are small, dilated blood vessels that appear close to the surface of the skin. These clusters of red, blue and/or purple veins are typically harmless but can be a source of self-consciousness. Fortunately, spider vein treatments are available to diminish or eliminate these blemishes, resulting in clearer skin.

How To Get Rid Of Spider Veins

Our providers use a procedure called “sclerotherapy” to make these unsightly areas vanish from sight. During the session, a concentrated saline solution is injected into the tiny vessels to cause them to collapse. It is generally much more affordable than laser therapy and only takes a few minutes to complete. The injection causes a mild warming sensation that lasts several seconds. After the procedure, bruising may last for up to a week.

The treated areas are wrapped in an ACE bandage for comfort and several sessions may be necessary to obtain a permanent result.

FAQs About Spider Vein Therapy

Spider veins are commonly confused with varicose veins, which are larger blood vessels that occur deeper in the legs. Varicose veins may cause fatigue, swelling, pain or feelings of heaviness that ultimately require surgical intervention. In contrast, spider veins are of cosmetic concern only and surgery is unnecessary for spider vein treatment.

We do not treat varicose veins at Donaldson Plastic Surgery.

Spider veins tend to be more common with age, as the veins lose elasticity over time. Women are also more susceptible than men, particularly during hormonal changes such as pregnancy, PMS and menopause.

A family history of spider veins or varicose veins can contribute to an increased risk, as can prolonged periods of standing or sitting. Obesity, hormonal fluctuations from puberty to the use of birth control pills and exposure to excessive sunlight are additional factors that may heighten the likelihood of developing spider veins.

Spider veins are the physical manifestation of weakened or damaged blood vessels that allow blood to pool and form visible veins near the skin’s surface. Most often, they show up in the legs, but can also appear on the face or other areas of the body.
